"Transforming Pre-algebra Teaching and Learning through Faculty Inquiry"
, was facilitated by Jay Cho and Brock Klein, Pasadena City College. Dr. Brock Klein is director of Pasadena City College’s Teaching and Learning Center (TLC), which is committed to helping under-prepared, first-generation college students move successfully from basic skills to transfer-level courses. Jay Cho is a professor of mathematics at Pasadena City College (PCC) and has participated in the development of several innovative programs offered by the college's Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) since 2003.

The presenters opened their session with a powerful video clip, highlighting a strategy called ‘the think aloud’ and featuring Jose, a student attempting a math word problem. Jose read aloud the problem and shared his thinking as he went. He soon started coming up with answers, many of which were off target. Despite this, the process of hearing him work through the problem was telling, and provided valuable data for the teacher. And the fact that Jose was willing to engage – publicly – in this kind of thinking exemplified his willingness to take-risks and engage in the problem. Institute participants notes a number of strengths exhibited by Jose as they reflected on their teaching.

The presenters outlined in detail what led to their inquiry focus and how their Pre-algebra Faculty Inquiry Group (FIG) worked.

  • Redefinition of professional teaching and professional development
  • Shared responsibility for student learning
  • Revitalized engagement in teaching
  • Action
  • More inquiry

Their FIG was comprised of :

  • 2 full-time math faculty leads
  • 7 full-time and adjunct math faculty
  • The math dean
  • 2 non-math faculty facilitators
