2007 Continuing
Connection and Collaboration Event
October 22 - 24, 2007
October 22 - Planning Meeting and Dinner with
Dr. Terry Bergeson
The TMP October planning meeting was an opportunity
for local project leads to come together to share ideas, hear project
updates and meet with state leaders, such as State Superintendent
Terry Bergeson. Mark Usdane from the Bill
and Melinda Gates Foundation also attended as well as representatives
from Agile
Mind and leaders from many of the TMP local partnerships.
The meeting commenced over dinner at The Palisades
in Federal Way, WA. Dr. Bergeson’s presence further solidified
her support of TMP as she shared the status of the revision of Washington
state’s mathematics learning standards for students in grades
kindergarten through 12th grade. The work is on track for a January
31, 2008 unveiling. TMP partner and frequent Institute resource
expert, Dr. Uri Treisman and the
Dana Center, have been contracted with to help OSPI
in this endeavor.
As you will recall, during the 2007 legislative session,
lawmakers called for a review and revision of the state’s
mathematics learning standards. At the end of August, the State
Board of Education concluded its work reviewing the standards. (The
report and recommendations can be found on the
SBE Web site.) The recommendations will guide the revision of
the K-12 mathematics standards.
The Dana Center has already begun the revision process.
The kick off event was a recent meeting of the K-12 Standards Revision
Team on October 3-5, 2007. TMP’s Kristen Maxwell is a member
of this team and helps represent TMP and the College Readiness Standards
in the revision process. A first draft of the revised standards
will be available for review during the month of December. Public
and stakeholder review and input will be elicited throughout the
process through focus groups and by way of a project website that
will be up in December. TMP will work to keep you informed and involved.
October 23 – Full Day Working Session
The first day of the October working session was designed
to foster enhanced two-way communication across TMP local partnerships
while hearing from exemplary projects and resources, such as Navigation
101, Microsoft’s
K-12 Math partnership, Partnership
for Learning,
Agile Mind and others. Attendees were asked to take a broad
frame and explore strategies for partnering and up-scaling their
local efforts.
In addition to having locally developed products as
scaleable models, it became clear from the meeting’s conversations
that TMP will also have some useful process learnings to share broadly.
Some examples include our work around local leadership development
and more effectively blending top-down, bottom-up approaches to
reform. Participants spent quite a bit of time discussing strategies
for better connecting with school and district leadership and making
this more of a priority for the remainder of the ’07-’08
year. TMP will use the January
OSPI conference as a venue for some additional work and connecting
around this topic.
Participants planned ways of connecting to and integrating
TMP with other math reform efforts (Microsoft, Nav 101, new state
math coaches, all ESDs, and regional math coordinators). Representatives
from each of these areas were present and spoke with attendees (related
resources included below).

October 24 – Full Day Working Session (Agile
Mind)
TMP is sponsoring and supporting the implementation
of Agile Mind in four local areas in Washington: Walla Walla,
Yakima, North King County, and Olympic-Kitsap County. Each site
is in its first year of a multi-year implementation process that
will require sustained leadership, coordination and collaboration,
and additional resources to ensure success. The planning session
on the 24th allowed Agile Mind site leads an opportunity to share
their implementation plans, learn more about data collection tools,
the professional development model, and to hear a mix of implementation
strategies and experiences from across the implementation sites.
Sustaining and increasing Agile Mind use in Washington
was also a theme. Representatives from Agile Mind met with Washington’s
Agile Mind pilot sites to share promising work and plan for broader
state implementation. TMP local project leads
Kristen Maxwell and Katy Absten
will work with Agile Mind on transitioning the administration of
Washington’s use to the Educational Service Districts with
ESD 105
and 114
taking an initial lead role in this process.
Agile
Mind’s “Leadership Guide to Success” was reviewed
as a helpful resource to new implementation efforts. The guide will
be used to help shape the evaluation of Agile Mind in Washington.
SESRC’s Dave Pavelchek will lead the evaluation of program
effectiveness. More on this coming soon.
Because interest in Agile Mind in Washington is growing,
the TMP has designed a set of processes to help coordinate and manage
growth. Two new online resources have been developed for new and
current users and can be found here>>.
Please give us feedback on these resources and begin to use them
as part of your Agile Mind efforts.
