Applied
Math Project-Seattle (AMP-S)
In partnership with Seattle Public Schools, Seattle
Community College District and Washington Applied Math Council,
this project will demonstrate a broad versatility of Applied Math:
- as a curriculum and pedagogy that "works"
with students who have a history of failure or struggle with math;
- as a viable math approach challenging and stimulating
to a wide-range of students; and
- as a TMP project customized to couple with Career
and Technical Education programs of study.
The project will also build on the work of a Japanese
Lesson Planning model. In addition to a normal teaching load, Japanese
teachers, at each local school, work as a team to enhance one lesson
per year. After classroom observation, the team makes final adjustments
and then publishes the lesson on a country-wide site which becomes
available to everyone. Research indicates that this model not only
improves curriculum, but it also has a positive impact on the quality
of teaching inside the classroom.
AMP-S will modify this model to develop a state-wide
applied math curriculum where posted applied math lessons not only
meet state graduation and college-readiness standards, but have
been "student-tested".
