Compass, College, and Careers (C3)

A Transition Math Project Phase II Partnership:

COMPASS, COLLEGE and CAREERS (C3) constitutes a partnership between Chief Sealth High School and South Seattle Community College. It is aimed at developing not only a college ready student, but also a student who, once equipped with better math skills, begins psychologically to visualize him or herself as “college material” and a higher wage earner. To accomplish this, we intend to focus on three goals: 1) provide diagnostic COMPASS testing to the Chief Sealth High School Junior class; 2) increase student motivation by connecting the student’s interests to career aspirations, the career aspirations to math, and math to better wages, and 3) provide resources and support to the high school teachers in order to promote goals 1 and 2.

COMPASS, COLLEGE AND CAREERS brings the student in at his or her academic skill level then introduces the engaging academic software of PLATO. The CSHS teachers and SSCC faculty will vertically align curriculum, provide career exploration, tutoring support, and award college credit. With these initiatives, the TMP team expects more students will be persuaded to shed their default stance of “What career can I do without math or college?”
