Blueprint for Success - Construction Math Initiative
The Construction Math Initiative’s (CMI) Transition Math Project
The Construction Center of Excellence worked with its numerous state and local partners to launch a one-year initiative designed as a direct response to both educators’ and employers’ interests in contributing to solutions meant to reduce remediation, and to improve math retention and application. CMI targeted school district partners in the King, Pierce, Snohomish, South Central (Kittitas, Klickitat, Skamania and Yakima Counties) and Spokane workforce development areas. Additional partners include the Associated General Contractors Education Foundation and the Washington Construction Workforce Network. Management of the Construction Math Toolbox specifically for the Transition Math Project Phase II was moved to Pierce County Careers Connection in June 2007.
CMI Partners
This partnership includes the Construction Center of Excellence at Renton Technical College; the Associated General Contractors Education Foundation; New Market Skills Center; Pierce County Careers Connection; the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council; the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction/Career Technical Education division; Pierce County Construction Partnership; Snohomish County Construction Careers Partnership; the Washington State Building and Construction Trades Council, AFL- CIO; the South Central Workforce Development Council; the Spokane Area Workforce Development Council; Washington State Department of Labor & Industries – Apprenticeship Division; the Washington State Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board; the Youth Council of Seattle-King County.
TMP Accomplishments
CMI distributed over 500 copies of the Construction Math Toolbox across middle and high 91 schools.
CMI hosted 4 daylong professional development workshops with the Washington State Associated General Contractors Education Foundation in Renton, Tacoma, Everett and at the Yakima Nation Reservation. CMI also hosted a weeklong institute for teachers at prominent Puget Sound job sites, such as the Sound Transit rail system at SeaTac Airport, college programs, and apprenticeship campuses in Pierce, King and Snohomish Counties. Over 40 middle and high school teachers attended these workshops.
The Construction Center of Excellence co-hosted a “Running Start for the Trades” daylong conference with New Market Skills Center in Tumwater, Washington, and featured the CMI project and toolbox as a workshop session.
Since its creation, the Construction Math Toolbox was recognized by Governor Chris Gregoire; it was ratified by the Washington State Building and Construction Trades Council as a primary curriculum tool for its apprenticeships; and teachers attending the Pierce County Careers Connection CTE/Math Workshops have built courses around the toolbox.
