Issaquah School District Math/CTE Connections (ISD)
The Issaquah School District’s (ISD) Transition Math Project
The Issaquah School District (ISD) Math/CTE Connections project has worked diligently to meet one of the greatest challenges and opportunities of math reform in Washington State: academic and career-technical education (CTE) integration. As the State Board of Education’s ruling in 2008 allows for an equivalent sequence of CTE-based math courses that can satisfy high school graduation requirements, this Transition Math Partnership has focused on developing courses, curriculum, and team teaching practices using the College Readiness Standards (CRS) as a guide for mapping and assessing their work.
ISD Partners
This partnership includes math and career-technical education departments across all of the Issaquah School District high schools: Issaquah, Liberty, Pacific Cascade, Skyline and Tiger Mountain.
TMP Accomplishments
ISD piloted and has enrolled 20 students in a team-taught course that integrates Algebra I and Enhanced Math/ Woods at Liberty High School. Students can earn .5 math credit and .5 CTE/occupational education credits simultaneously in this course. The model framework for this course is being replicated for Enhanced Math/Metals, which will focus on Geometry competencies. The Enhanced Math/Woods course curriculum has been mapped between CRS math standards and the Residential Carpentry CTE framework (Algebra I), and the Sheet Metal Technology CTE framework (Geometry).
