North King County Project (NKC)
The NKC initiated its project by conducting a comparative study of math performance of students enrolled at Shoreline Community College (SCC) with a student cohort from the Shoreline School District enrolled at SCC. The results of math placement testing and subsequent math course enrollments were examined to determine if the current placement test used by the college was leading to appropriate placement in developmental math courses. In addition, cross-sector observations of pre-college math courses were held to look for areas where the College Readiness Standards were missing from curricula. As a result, the project launched a math success strategies course for college students who are taking remedial/developmental math courses at Shoreline Community College. NKC is also developing a math study skills curriculum, which will be infused into existing high school math courses at Shorecrest High School.
NKC Partners
The North King County Project is a partnership of Shoreline Community College and high schools in the North King County area, particularly those in the Shoreline School District.
TMP Accomplishments
NKC conducted a comparative study of transcripts to determine if placement tests were leading to appropriate placements in their developmental math courses. One outcome from this research was the development of the NKC Mathematics Success Strategies course, which has been offered for four quarters at Shoreline Community College. This course is meant to be taken in conjunction with developmental math courses.
Shorecrest High School is developing a Math Study Skills Curriculum to supplement existing math courses. Students are pre-tested using a College Readiness Standards Student Attributes Scale, and at the end of the semester, receive a complementary post-test. These measurement tools will inform course modifications in the future.
NKC developed motivational posters (Brainpower, Mindset) and used in its math classrooms at Shorecrest High School, using visual cues to remind students to keep a positive mindset about math.
