Olympic Peninsula TMP-II Project (OP-TMP)

The Olympic Peninsula’s (OP-TMP) Transition Math Project
Olympic Educational Service District (OESD) functions primarily as a support agency that delivers educational services regionally that would be too prohibitive for individual schools or districts.   In this established role, OESD had a foundation of partnership with their districts to launch their TMP Phase II project.  A structured professional learning community (PLC) model has been central to their focus on professional development.  Each school’s math department has transformed from primarily administrative meetings to time spent in process inquiry, implementation, modification, and overall instructional improvement.  This “cycle” ensures practices and products are truly tested in the classroom.  In addition to local PLC, the OP-TMP organized a Grant Leadership Team that meets monthly to create and modify common products that align with the College Readiness Standards.  Thse PLC structure models the work of the Southwest Educational Developmental Lab.

OPTMP Partners
OP-TMP includes Olympic ESD, Olympic College, and nine school districts (Shelton, North Mason, South Kitsap, Bremerton, Central Kitsap, North Kitsap, Mary M. Knight, Bainbridge Island, and Quilicene) in the region.

TMP Accomplishments
Over 40 teachers have participated in forty hours of professional development and 20 hours of PLC meetings each year of the project.

OP-TMP researched the best possible professional development models and then developed a refined package of six professional training modules that are suited to cross-sector math teams. There is a module for each phase of the Professional Teaching and Learning Cycle (PTLC).  In addition, OP-TMP developed a PTLC guide for replicating their PLC model.  OESD also has a Roadmap brochure explaining how professional learning communities foster sustainable practices and innovative instruction.

Olympic College has three hosted forums for OP-TMP to enrich cross-sector relationships.

In addition to its comprehensive professional development at the local building and leadership levels, OP-TMP has developed outreach videos ( Thinking Big,  Sound Familiar?, and  Lisa) and messages for students, demonstrating the importance of math achievement no matter what post-secondary education route or career they wish to pursue.
