The Sammamish River Area Math Access Project’s (SamRAMP)Transition Math Project
Studies show that the continual practice of mathematics is essential to retaining proficiency beyond high school. The SamRAMP project conducted two studies with local high school graduates who enrolled at Cascadia, and discovered an alarming trend: in 2007, over 65% of Northshore graduates were taking a developmental or “pre-college” math as their first college course. In most cases, these developmental, remedial math courses do not satisfy necessary credit loads towards a degree. To remedy this issue, the primary goal of SamRAMP has been to increase the number of students of enrolling in mathematics courses in their senior year of high school by increasing collaboration among secondary and post-secondary faculty, and counseling students and parents to the need for additional math beyond the basic graduation requirements while still in high school.

SamRAMP is an alliance among Cascadia Community College and its surrounding school districts, particularly Northshore.
TMP Accomplishments
SamRAMP conducted studies analyzing college math placement scores and course enrollments from a Northshore School District cohort in 2007. The findings from these surveys have been used to inform students of the college ready standards they need to meet in order to be ready for life beyond high school. Because of this work, two of the 3 high schools in Northshore school district added senior-level math courses aligned with the College Readiness content standard for Algebra.
In 2007, SamRAMP launched a steering committee of high school and college faculty to develop a strategic direction for in-depth, shared work to increase the number of students prepared for college-level math. This group has become a professional learning community that meets on a regular basis.
In 2007, SamRAMP hosted its first annual math symposium with junior and senior high school teachers from the Northshore School District. This symposium began a collaborative examination to align math standards across all levels, and to ensure students are encouraged to take rigorous and additional math courses while in secondary school.
