Transitions in Math Education-SW Washington (TIME-SW)
The Southwest Washington Transitions in mathematics education (SW-TIME) Project
SW-TIME has developed a substantive, regional approach to align the College Readiness Standards and implement and disseminate courses in its two partnership school districts, Battleground and Evergreen. Identifying transition issues as young as the elementary years, particularly in achievement and positivity, has led SW-TIME to address critical stages of student success in an organic and sustainable way. SW-TIME’s efforts have included senior bridge courses, professional development series, and regional meetings. Evergreen School District, one of the two K12 partners, has even adopted an “Algebra for All” focus, improving how teachers, students and their families perceive and act upon math course taking and its relevance to college and adult life.
SW TIME Partners
The SW-TIME partnership includes Washington State University – Vancouver, Clark College, and the Battleground and Evergreen School Districts (including 5 high schools; 130 K-12 teachers and counselors, and all of the college math faculties from WSU-Vancouver and Clark College).
TMP Accomplishments
SW-TIME has offered Algebra Workshops for K-9 teachers to increase capacity in delivering instruction and improved classroom practices.
SW-TIME has locally adapted a Senior Bridge Course option, which replicated the Project TIME’s Senior Bridge Course. Four teachers are trained to offer the course. The piloted course has been offered in one high school so far, and local adaptations to career awareness and college testing preparation were integrated into the course. As a result of this course, COMPASS pre- and post-testing indicates increased student achievement. A Junior Bridge course for Algebra 2 has been planned for two other high schools.
SW-TIME implemented the first middle-level math endorsement course in Algebraic Thinking. This work was influenced by state-level policy.
Joint math symposia were hosted by SW-TIME for WSU-Vancouver and Clark College math faculty around college-readiness topics.
College-readiness workshops and other types of supports were implemented at WSU-Vancouver and Clark College for lower division students to ease their transition and ensure success in college-level mathematics courses.
The “Building a Bridge from High School to College” joint regional meetings were co-hosted by SW-TIME and other partners, including Lower Columbia College and Educational Service District 112.
SW-TIME utilized the WAMAP.org platform created by Pierce College’s TMP Phase II project to create common assessments in middle and high schools with a focus on college readiness.
