Whatcom Math Project (WMP)
WMP Partners
The WMP includes the Whatcom Tech Prep Consortium, Bellingham Technical College, Whatcom Community College, Western Washington University, and the Bellingham, Blaine, Ferndale, Lynden, Lynden Christian, Mt. Baker, and Nooksack Valley School Districts.
TMP Accomplishments
Multiple lesson plans for each of the CRS content standards were developed during the WMP Lesson Plan Writing workshop in 2008. These lesson plans are shared statewide.
The WMP has conducted several surveys to examine student pre-college math course-taking trends in Whatcom County. The findings from these surveys have been used to inform and improve classroom practices that can lead to the math proficiencies needed to smoothly transition to college-level mathematics. These surveys include the TMP Survey Report of Students pre-college math course taking (Fall 2005), which analyzed trends in Whatcom Community College students, and the Whatcom County Secondary and Community College Mathematics Survey (Winter 2008), which is a county-wide glimpse of the pedagogical environments and tools used in Whatcom County. An updated survey of students taking pre-college math at WCC is due out winter 2009.
Along with surveys, the WMP has fostered peer review groups as a professional development strategy. These groups use a professional learning community model to exchange good ideas and practices county-wide.
One of the greatest areas of achievement for WMP has been its outreach campaign for students and their parents. In particular, WMP has disseminated locally and statewide the College Readiness Process Standards poster, the College Readiness Content Standards poster, and the College Readiness Math Promotional poster. Further, the WMP has sponsored Community Math Nights to offer support to parents as math advocates in the home, particularly in supporting math skill acquisition and encouraging rigorous math course-taking while in high school.
