Yakima
Valley Project (YVP)
We
intend to identify/create opportunities for students to engage in
rigorous mathematics that is personally relevant and to make those
opportunities readily available to all students for all four years
of their high school experience. We believe this will result in
more students choosing to take mathematics classes beyond those
required for graduation thereby increasing their success in the
post secondary education opportunities they choose.
The major products emerging from
this three year project will include:
- A strong, sustainable community of learners consisting
of mathematics educators from public high schools and institutions
of higher education
- The identification and highlighting of the mathematics
inherent in existing high school classes
- The creation of an 11/12 grade mathematics class
which will serve to bridge the high school to college transition
Our success will be measured by an increase in the
percentage of high school students taking mathematics beyond the
graduation requirement and a decrease in the percentage of recent
high school graduates who choose to attend college or university
that place into pre-college level math classes.
