Washington State Math Placement Initiative

Sponsored by the Transition Mathematics Project

The Washington State Math Placement Initiative, with sponsorship by the Transition Math Project, is a new project designed to evaluate the role of math placement tests for students making the transition from high school to college, compare and articulate the differences in test formats and purposes, identify the challenges with placement and diagnostic testing, and gather and present for a wide audience examples of relevant work underway in Washington and around the country.

The Office of Educational Assessment (OEA), at the University of Washington is aligning the math placement test with the College Readiness Mathematics Standards.  When complete, the diagnostic will be used statewide to ensure students are well-prepared for college-level mathematics.

OEA formed a Math Placement Test Advisory Group of Washington state teachers and faculty to oversee this project and make certain the resulting test measures the College Readiness Mathematics Standards content and processes.

The Advisory Group held meetings in 2006 and 2007 to develop and plan this project.  Through their expertise, a range of resources were created and collected specifically for the math placement test.
