A conversation with Dr. Kay Merseth, Harvard University: Applications of the case-method of instruction

Dr. Kay Merseth, Senior Lecturer on Education, and Director of the Teacher Education Program at Harvard University, has been a tremendous resource to the TMP project teachers and faculty. She attended a TMP summer institute and, based on demand, presented a webinar followed immediately by presenting at a mid-year planning and working session with TMP local project leaders. Her time with TMP teachers and faculty has focused on two of her many areas of expertise, namely mathematics education and the case-method of instruction.

The following audio clips capture a conversation between Dr. Merseth and TMP local project lead Dr. Barbara Freeouf.

The intent in recording the conversation was twofold:

(1)  to simply share more broadly Dr. Merseth’s practical ideas and approaches to the case-study method of instruction, and

(2) to explore and share ideas about how  this method is applied to a specific local project with its unique characteristics, issues and challenges.  For more on case method, check out Windows on Teaching Math: Case studies in middle and secondary classrooms, edited by Katherine Merseth.
