On August 4–8, 2008, TMP hosted its fourth summer math institute, aptly described by one participant as “a solid-packed week of information and resources critical to improving math instruction.”
Bringing together nearly 80 teachers, faculty and administrative and state leaders, this institute provided an opportunity to demonstrate and share innovative ways to implement and support standards-based teaching in math.
The institute targeted three primary goals:
a) to foster collaboration around mathematics teaching and learning,
b) to explore strategies and a vision for sustaining the work of the TMP projects, both in local regions and statewide, and
c) to share new, innovative ways to implement the College Readiness Standards to assist students in their post-secondary transitions.
To achieve these goals, the institute drew heavily on the experiences of the ten local teams representing all regions in Washington state. The institute also featured the voices of national experts and leaders from the fields of math education, mathematics, research and school leadership, and drew on the rich experiences of the institute participants.

Over the course of 5 days, participant teams learned from one another, raised tough questions, debated possible solutions, and shared promising practices. “Aha!” moments were common as participants presented their projects and results during a lively poster session on day four.
Stuart Boersma, Professor of Mathematics at Central Washington University, noted: “It was powerful to see teachers from different disciplines thinking very carefully about the important mathematics connections in their courses.”

As the work of the institute teams continues, the TMP will post on its website team updates, products and resources. Our goal now, following the institute, is to further help build the collective knowledge about how to begin, connect and sustain collaborative initiatives that foster math success for all students.
