National Education Organizations

Nationally, a number of organizations and initiatives have embraced the need to raise math expectations, improve math performance and better connect the K-12 and postsecondary education systems.

Listed here are current initiatives and organizations with goals that complement and reinforce the work of TMP. Please check back often for updates and new sites.

Achieve, Inc  was created by the nation's governors and business leaders, Achieve helps states raise academic standards and achievement so that all students graduate ready for college, careers, and citizenship.

American Diploma Project is a joint project of Achieve, Inc and the Education Trust defining the English and math that graduates must master to succeed in credit-bearing college courses and high-performance, high-growth jobs.

AMATYC Beyond Crossroads As part of its mission to promote and improve mathematics education in two-year colleges, AMATYC published its first standards document, Crossroads in Mathematics: Standards for Introductory College Mathematics, in 1995.

The Bridge Project builds on the view that reforms affecting K-12 and higher education must occur across systems in order to achieve the desired outcomes. The overarching purpose of the project is to improve opportunities for all students to enter and succeed in higher education by strengthening the alignment between higher education admissions-related requirements and K-12 curriculum frameworks, standards, and assessments.

The Center for Educational Policy Research works with federal agencies, state education departments, non-governmental organizations, private foundations and school districts to support research on a range of issues in the areas of high school-to-college articulation, adequacy funding, large-scale assessment models, and other policy initiatives designed to improve school success.

Education Trust works for the high academic achievement of all students at all levels, pre-kindergarten through college, and forever closing the achievement gaps that separate low-income students and students of color from other youth.

Eisenhower National Clearinghouse  offers curricula and resources for math and science teachers.

Center for Student Success of the Research and Planning Group utilizes the skills and unique perspectives of institutional researchers, faculty, and administrative staff from California community colleges, CSS conducts research and evaluation projects.  This searchable site contains an archive of promising practices at work in California's 109 community colleges.  

Houston Urban Network for Science, Technology, Engineering & Technology  empowers teachers, students, parents and the broader community of learning by integrating math and science into every aspect of the learning experience.

Knowing Mathematics for Teaching Algebra is a research project is an interdisciplinary Michigan State University-based research project. The research team is led by faculty with collective expertise in mathematics, mathematics education, research design, psychometric analysis, and secondary school mathematics teaching and curriculum, with the support of research collaborators around the country.

Learning First Alliance is a partnership of 18 national education associations dedicated to improving student learning in America’s public schools.

Mathematical Association of America is the largest professional society that focuses on mathematics accessible at the undergraduate level.

National Center for Academic Transformation is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides leadership in using information technology to redesign learning environments to produce better learning outcomes for students at a reduced cost to the institution.

National Center for Education Statistics, located within the U.S. Department of Education and the Institute of Education Sciences, is the primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data related to education.

The National Center for Improving Student Learning and Achievement in Mathematics and Science (NCISLA) has conducted an intensive, nationally coordinated research program — in collaboration with teachers — to advance effective reform of K-12 mathematics and science.

National Center for Research on Teacher Learning operated from 1985 to 1995, supported in part by major grants from the Office of Educational Research and Improvement, US Department of Education. Based in the College of Education at Michigan State University, its mission was to provide leadership in the field of teacher education research.

National Center on Public Policy and Higher Education's report entitled Gathering Momentum: Building the Learning Connection between Schools and Colleges (pdf) is a 2002 report produced by The Hechinger Institute on Education and the Media and the Institute for Educational Leadership discussing the benefits and challenges of cross-sector cooperation and collaboration.

National Council of Teachers of Mathematics is a public voice of mathematics education, providing vision, leadership and professional development to support teachers in ensuring equitable mathematics learning of the highest quality for all students.

National Institute for Science Education was a five year project from 1996 -2001 sponsored by the National Science Foundation to research and disseminate a variety of education/system reform topics.

National Resource Center for The First Year Experience and Students in Transition  has as its mission to support and advance efforts to improve student learning and transitions into and through higher education. They offer conferences, teleconferences, institutes, and workshops; publishing monographs, a peer-reviewed journal, an electronic newsletter, guides, and books; generating and supporting research and scholarship; hosting visiting scholars; and administering a web site and listservs.

Ohio Early Mathematics Placement Testing Program is a high school mathematics intervention program designed to help high school students make decisions about taking mathematics courses while still in high school.

SciMathMN Founded in 1993, SciMathMN is a non-profit, statewide education and business coalition advocating for quality K-12 science, mathematics and technology education based on research, national standards and effective practices. Located in Minnesota.

Prescriptions for Effective Retention  is a Texas-based education partnership that has developed an informational site about retention issues and practical blueprints to guide colleges across Texas in their efforts to improve student retention and success.
