A. Reports and Research / Evaluation Studies
- AEI’s Diplomas and Dropouts (June 3, 2009) College completion rates across nearly 1,400 colleges and universities are tracked in this report, revealing that the average four-year college graduates less than 55% of its first-time students in six years. The most competitive institutions graduate 88% of their students, the least competitive graduate just 35%. While the data in this space is limited (we are only calculating first-time students, not part-time students), this report is an important first step in raising awareness that this nation is facing a significant college completion challenge.
- On the Front Lines of Schools (June, 2009) by Civic Enterprises and funded by the AT&T Foundation—Based on a national survey of teachers and principals, the report reveals among other top-line findings that less than one-third of teachers believe schools should expect all students to meet high academic standards, graduate with the skills to do college-level work, and provide extra support to struggling students to help them meet those standards. And while a majority of teachers also feels that there should be additional resources and supports for students, the report identifies a clear expectations gap between staff and students. In Civic Enterprises 2006 Silent Epidemic report, two-thirds of dropouts surveyed said they would have worked harder if more were demanded of them.
- The annual Diplomas Count issue of EducationWeek, produced by the Editorial Projects in Education Research Center— Diplomas Count 2009: Broader Horizons – The Challenge of College Readiness for All Students (June 11, 2009) focuses on college-readiness, providing a guide to key issues, debates and developments on the topic.
